Apart from the traditional on-campus services (libraries and computer rooms, etc.) the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona contains all those services to be found in a city, such as sports facilities, permanent residences and businesses. This endeavour to provide our university with appropriate facilities is complemented by a large shopping precinct, restaurant and service centre: Plaça Cívica.

Libraries (back to Services)

The UAB Library Service is comprised of eight libraries spread around the Bellaterra Campus, the Sabadell University Library, the General Map Archives, the Periodical and Newspaper Reading Room and the four libraries located in the Medicine Faculty's teaching facilities in hospitals.

The library catalogue can be accessed at the terminals located in each library, from any computer which is connected to the UAB intranet or from home. It is also possible to obtain direct access to other library catalogues around the world.

The libraries are equipped with all kinds of appuratus to facilitate your search (microfilms and microfiche, videos, compact discs, CD ROMs, etc.). Besides, a CD ROM-based web is available with several free-access consultation points at users' disposition.

Plaça Cívica shopping and service centre (back to Services)

The Plaça Cívica boasts a wide range of cultural activities, entertainment, shops and restaurants. Besides, the UAB Information Point, the Campus Job Centre and Friends of the UAB Association are located there.

In the students' building you can participate in unions and associations as well as university culture (theatre, cinema, music, etc.).

Besides, it offers you everything you might need without having to leave the campus: articles from the third world, a driving school, a chemist's, a photographer's, a computer store , a confectioner's, a bookshop, an optician's, a hairdresser's, a newsagent's, a photocopy service, boutiques, sports equipment stores, banks, restaurants, cafeterias and a travel agency.

Gespa nursery school (back to Services)

The nursery school is open to members of the university community's children aged between four months and two years.

Catalan language centre (back to Services)

The Catalan Language Centre offers the following services: linguistic consultation and advice on terminology; general and specialised Catalan language courses, and tailor made courses for groups who require Catalan for special purposes .

Besides, it offers the university community the chance to participate in the linguistic volunteer scheme.

A Catalan language self-access centre is also available.

Centre for social affairs (back to Services)

The centre sets up and coordinates several social support programmes: PIUNE, Aiding the disabled (direct and personal aid for the disabled), Volunteer Centre (which coordinates volunteer groups in hospitals, voluntary inmate support, linguistic volunteers, volunteers for social integration of the disabled, volunteers for Bosnia, volunteers for preventative health medicine) and the PAUNI programme for voluntary support for foreigners.

Besides, the centre offers advice on alternatives to military service and manages alternative social and community service programmes (PSS) offered by the UAB.

Information point (back to Services)

Its basic aim is to provide information about all matters related to the UAB (courses, academic regulations, organisms, extra-curricular activities) and university affairs in general (information about Catalan, Spanish and overseas universities).

At the Plaça Cívica Information Point there are self-access computers available to users. These terminals provide information about the UAB as well as information from the Internet.

Cultural centre (back to Services)

At the "Vicerectorat d'Estudiants" and "Promoció Cultural" the University's cultural programme is organized for each academic year, with the generic name of "Cultura en Viu" (Live Culture). A variety of extra-curricular cultural initiatives from diverse spheres of the university community are coordinated.

The UAB's cultural organisations are the following: Aula de Teatre de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ATUAB) (theatre group), Cineclub Fritz Lang (cinema club), Cor de la UAB (heart of the UAB), Espai B5-125 d'Arts Plàstiques (plastic arts), Espai Musical de la UAB (musical group), Grup de Dansa de la UAB (dance group) and Orquestra de la UAB (the UAB's orchestra).

Medical Centre(back to Services)

The Medical Centre provides the following services: treatment for casualties and minor injuries, doctor's appointments and nursing services, remedial treatment, injections and vaccinations, blood and urine tests, healthcare advice and information, blood pressure, visits by specialists in gyneacology, dentistry, sports medicine and psychology.

For medical attention, please show your DNI and student card.

Opening hours:
Monday to Friday, 9:15 to 12.45 and 15:00 to 20:00.

Centre for Physical Activities(SAF) (back to Services)

The Centre for Physical Activities organises all kinds of activities: taught activities (aerobics, swimming), short promotional courses and sports schools (Tae Kwondo, climbing, lifesaving), adventure sports (windsurfing, absailing, gliding), competitions (nearly all sports) specialised courses and workshops (relaxation, dance, etc.).

For the academic year 2000-2001, the following facilities are available: indoor sports centre, artificial football pitch, fronton courts, rock concert hall, outdoor racetracks, saunas, heated indoor swimming pool, squash courts, fitness centre, gym, archery range and room with tatami-covered floor.

Religious Instruction and Assistance Service (Safor) (back to Services)

The aim of this service is to provide the university community with religious instruction and assistance. As well as providing a humane and religious welcome, the Service aims to deal with the study of issues relating to relationships between faith and culture.

Modern Language Service (SIM) (back to Services)

The SIM imparts courses in English, German, French, Italian, Russian, Korean and Occitan. These courses are officially recognised by the UAB, which issues certificates of language competence at elementary level (on completing 3rd or 4th level, according to language) or higher level (on completing 5th or 6th level, according to language).

The SIM also imparts intensive and semi-intensive courses in Catalan and Spanish for Foreigners.

Besides, the SIM imparts language courses for special purposes (First Certificate and Proficiency preparatory courses, conversation courses, etc.) or which form part of university study programmes (Medicine, Psychology and English Philology).

Electronic Mail and Remote Access Services (CESAR)

CESAR provides you with a personal email account, access to an electronic directory of classmates' email addresses, access to the UAB intranet and the World Wide Web, newsgroups and debates, free programme storage space and manuals about available tools and services, contacts for research and collaboration, access to data bases, image banks and document archives in all scientific areas, as well as connection with public and private institutions around the world.

To obtain your CESAR connection, just take your UAB smart card or your registration receipt to the "Servei d'Informàtica" (I.T. Service) (building D) or the "Servei d'Informàtica Distribuïda" (Local I.T. Service) at your centre. For further information, please ring 93 581 11 11 (the Information Point).

Campus Job Centre (back to Services)

Its aims are:

To provide students with the chance to put knowledge acquired at University into practice in the world of work
To facilitate qualified students' integration into the labour market.
To create a current of opinion between the academic and business worlds, enabling them to adapt to each other's needs with a view to maximising social efficiency.
Activities:

Information, guidance and training.
On-campus presentations.
Inserting CVs on the World Wide Web.
Direct placement on the labour market acting in partnership with the "Servei Català de Col·locació" (Catalan Employment Service).
Educational cooperation programmes between University and Business.

Vila Universitària (Halls of Residence) (back to Services)

There are two thousand places in an area of 30 x 101 m2 of living quarters, adjacent to all kinds of services such as a bookshop, a newsagent's, a photographer's, a bakery, a grocer's, a supermarket, a laundry, a dry cleaner's and a hairdresser's.

Hotel-escola Campus (back to Services)

The hotel boasts all kinds of amenities and services, as well as syndicate rooms, conference and function suites, with seating for up to six hundred people.

Congress and Conventions Office (back to Services)

The Office organises a range of activities or gives them the necessary support. It also provides short-term rental accommodation during the summer.
