Presentation

In partnership with the Natura Foundation and with the support of the International Ecotourism Society, the University School of Tourism and Hotel Management offers this postgraduate course with a teaching programme adapted to the needs, expectations and reality of ecotourism and sustainable tourism. This programme was conceived from an international perspective, and while it concentrates on Spain and Europe, the experience of other countries and continents with an extraordinary cultural and natural heritage, such as Latin America is also considered.

Ecotourism has been a rapidly expanding segment of the tourism market for the last few decades. Modern society is displaying sensitivity and a growing interest in the environment while the paradigm of sustainability is ever present in tourism activity. Sustainable tourism, which is economically feasible and respects the environment and culture of tourist destinations, while benefiting both tourists and host societies is the future of tourism - in fact it is the only type of tourism possible. Besides, factors which determine the sustainability of tourism in general, such as the introduction of environmental and social criteria in tourism establishments and their management will be demanded and taken for granted by conventional tourists.

Ecotourism is quality tourism, which attracts a sensitive, active and refined clientele, and focuses especially on welcome areas. This contributes to the conservation of natural and cultural resources that make such tourism possible as well as the development of local communities.

International interest in ecotourism was reflected by the declaration of 2002 as the International Ecotourism Year, overseen by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organisation, as well as the World Ecotourism Summit held in Quebec that same year.

Aims

The course has the following specific learning aims:

· To acquire a deep insight into the concepts "ecotourism" and "sustainable tourism" as well as the ecotourism and nature tourism markets around the world: structure, products, participants involved in supply (tour operators, companies, public institutions) and demand (customers and ecotourists).

· To develop the skill to identify environmental and cultural resources in an area with a view to developing ecotourism facilities and products.

· To understand the aims and operation of protected wildlife areas as tourist destinations, to identify problems associated with tourists' presence and to learn visitor management and control strategies.

· To acquire analytical tools and knowledge of the environmental management of tourism such as the assessment of environmental impact and tourism areas' physical, psychological, social and economic capacity.

· To get to know existing types of management tools: their aims, features, obtainment and application procedures, for the environmental improvement of tourism facilities and amenities.

· To understand the social dimension of ecotourism and the role of local communities in its definition and management.

Course participants

University degree holders and tourism industry practitioners and specialists interested in the creation and promotion of ecotourism products or in the management of tourism trends in fragile yet valuable natural areas, as well as the greening of tourist facilities and amenities.

Teaching methodology

The programme is classroom based. Theoretical, conceptual and instrumental content is combined with its practical application, culminating in the organisation of field trips.

The field trips are an especially important part of the course because ecotourism is participative and active, as well as being closely related to the environment, land and local communities. There are four field trips during the course.
Participants are expected to do a final project in which they apply the knowledge acquired during the course. It might take the form of practical training at the Natura Foundation or another company in the ecotourism sector.
An alternative option is to attend a work camp at one of the Natura Foundation's development projects in Peru or Zambia.

Facilities

Classes will be held at the 'Escola Universitària de Turisme i Direcció Hotelera', on the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus. The classrooms are soundproofed and fitted with modern teaching materials (projector, OHP, VCR, TV monitor, etc.) and computer facilities are available to students. There is also access for the physically charged. Other resources at the UAB campus will be available to participants such as the UAB student card, library access and discounts on services, etc.
