Masters in Tourism Destination Planning and Management   (back to top)

Presentation                       (back to top)

Tourism destination planning and management requires specialised knowledge and tools which meet the needs and aims of tourism areas in constant evolution and competition.

Our programme in Tourism Destination Planning provides students with the suitable skills, values and know-how to enable them to manage tourism destinations in both the public and private sectors from an updated and professional viewpoint.

This programme is divided into two complimentary 'itineraries'. The 24 credit programme leads to a postgraduate qualification, and the 16 credit programme leads to a masters degree. With the aim of adapting to different educational needs, this programme is offered as a masters course, a postgraduate diploma or participants can take one or more of its individual modules.

This programme is aimed at:

University graduates, tourism sector practising professionals and administrative staff interested in a high quality specialised education that would enable them to participate in tourism destination planning.

Course aims are:

  • To provide participants with theoretical and, above all, practical know-how of strategic planning and its application to tourism destinations, working from a state of the art perspective and by means of scientific methodology.
  • To carry out deep analysis of recent problematic issues and activity in national and international tourism planning. This work will follow up the experience of both the public and private tourism sectors' professionals and participants.
  • To verse students in different tourist destination products and the methods and techniques involved in tourism marketing.
  • To provide students with the necessary methodological tools to carry out tourist destination planning, with special emphasis on quality management systems.

Teaching methodology                      (back to top)

Classroom-based sessions: Most of the course will be imparted in classroom-based sessions, combining theory with practical analysis. Theory will be expounded at the outset of each subject unit and will be followed by case studies and conferences.

Online learning platform: Part of the course content will be delivered by web-based documents with exclusive access for our students. Online learning guarantees continuous support and direct contact between coordinators and students. The platform is a learning tool, which includes a forum, email address, links, notice board and the chance to download most of the classroom-based learning materials.

Exercises: Each module includes exercises on course content and case studies.

Field trips: There will be three field trips during the course, combined with the classroom-based sessions.

Teaching approach: The teaching approach will be dynamic, with a view to stimulating student participation and debate. In this sense, students' attitude and participation are fundamental. This method should facilitate the exchange of opinions on the subjects under discussion.

Masters Course in Hotel Group Senior Management

Presentation

The 'University School of Tourism and Hotel Management' - UAB and the 'School of Doctorate Studies and Continuing Education' - UAB, offer this masters course with a view to providing an indispensable university level specialised course in such a significant economic sphere as hotel management.

The main hotel chains are going through an unstoppable process of development, globalisation and vertical concentration. This process means that professionals now need to further their education by acquiring more skills and competences thereby widening their corporate view and enabling them to manage new hotel groups. This programme in Hotel Group Senior Management was conceived to bridge an existing knowledge gap by providing hotel chain senior managers with a solid foundation in business management (during the block of core modules) to be topped up with a specialised block of modules on the hotel sector. This educational programme is imparted to university standards and its quality teaching is guaranteed by the UAB.

The ongoing process of professionalisation in the management of all kinds of hospitality establishments is generating a shortage of well-qualified managerial staff able to face future changes in their work surroundings. This masters course aims to provide professionals with the versatility to manage any type of new project in their respective organisations.

A flexible course structure

The course has proved to be adaptable to students' needs and concerns since its conception. In this way, the programme may vary according to the knowledge-base of course participants, thereby ensuring that students do not repeat course material studied on prior occasions.

With regards to course structure, this masters is divided into two blocks, the first of which consists of core modules with the aim of homogenising participants' levels, to be followed by a specialised block. In the first block, teaching staff from the UAB course in Business Administration and Management verse participants in the use of the main business management tools. During the second, hospitality sector professionals will outline the "good practices" and experiences that have contributed to their professional success. The duration of the first block may be shorter than stipulated for those students with a good working knowledge of the course material.

Objective

The main aim of this programme in Hotel Group Senior Management is to provide professionals the knowledge, skills and techniques that will enable them to manage and administrate hotel groups in an innovative, strategic and effective way.

Once this aim has been achieved, course participants will possess the versatility to manage any department or new project in their respective hotel chains. Their understanding of problems will be deeper and their analytical skills enhanced.

To achieve these aims, the school's teaching staff is made up of the best practising professionals and educational experts who know how to transmit the knowledge and experience that has lead them to manage consultancy firms, suppliers and hotel chains. During both study blocks, the analysis of case studies as a teaching tool will be fundamental

The course is aimed at professionals who are already involved in the area of hotel management and newly-qualified university students who are interested in undertaking highly specialised studies which lead to entry into senior management of corporations and hotel groups.

Teaching methodology                       (back to top)

As we are aware of the need to condense a great deal of material into one course, online transfer of documents and support materials has been used since the outset, which facilitates contact between teaching staff and course participants.

Classroom based sessions

Most course material is delivered in classroom based sessions in which theoretical content is combined with practical analysis. All such material is later available to participants on the online teaching platform.

Online teaching platform

The rest of the course content will be available on the UAB online teaching platform. Only course participants will be able to access and download such documents.

This platform guarantees permanent permanent contact between course coordinators and students, who will find therein, announcements, timetables, e-mails, discussion forums as well as further course materials and practical case studies.

One of the most appealing features of this course is undoubtedly the wealth of experience contributed by its own course participants. Therefore, teaching staff will solicit and stimulate the active participation of course members through debates. The latter's forthcoming attitude and participation will be fundamental if active debate is to take place.
