Masters and Postgraduates

MASTERS IN TOURISM DESTINATION PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT
(5th Edition)

Presentation

Tourism destination planning and management requires specialised knowledge and tools which meet the needs and aims of tourism areas in constant evolution and competition. Our programme in Tourism Destination Planning (fifth edition 2005-2006) provides students with the suitable skills, values and know-how to enable them to manage tourism destinations in both the public and private sectors from an updated and professional viewpoint.

Objectives

The objectives of the programme are:

  • To provide participants with theoretical and, above all, practical know-how of strategic planning and its application to tourism destinations, working from a state of the art perspective and by means of scientific methodology.

  • To carry out deep analysis of recent problematic issues and activity in national and international tourism planning. This work will follow up the experience of both the public and private tourism sectors' practitioners and participants.

  • To provide participants with better knowledge of the different tourism destination products and the different methods and techniques to market them.

  • To offer participants the necessary methodological tools to plan tourism destinations, paying special attention to quality management.
Potential Participants

University graduates and practitioners, as well as civil servants interested in a high-level specialized education, which will enable them to work in management and planning of tourism destinations.

Qualifications

Participants have the chance to earn three qualifications:

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism Destination Planning and Management (25 credits).

  • Masters Degree in Tourism Destination Planning and Management (36 credits).

  • Attendance certificates awarded by the UAB Postgraduate School for those participants who take one or more specialized modules from the programme.
Teaching Methodology

This postgraduate programme makes use of blended learning, in which classroom-based techniques are combined with online distance learning.

- Tutorials:  tutorials take place on the course's online Virtual Teaching Platform with course coordinators. At the same time, two periods of face to face tutorials are held during the course, one of which is concerned with academic follow-up whereas the other is for the Masters Dissertation.

The structure of the teaching programme is as follows:

- Classroom-based sessions. Most of the course is imparted in the classroom, where theoretical content is combined with practical analysis. The theoretical sessions are held at the beginning of each subject and the practical component comprises case studies and lectures.

- Virtual Teaching Platform.  Part of the contents is delivered via our virtual teaching platform with exclusive use for course participants. Distance learning guarantees permanent attendance by the course coordinators and direct contact with participants. The platform is conceived to support participants with a forum, internal email, link section, notice board and a section which facilitates downloading of most of the materials for classroom-based sessions and delivers supplementary documentation provided by the course coordinators.

- Exercises.  Each module contains exercises related to course and lecture content.

-Field trips.  Several field trips related to lecture content will be organised.

- Participative classes.   Teaching staff will stimulate active participation and will encourage debate. Student participation is fundamental to the success in these debates with a view to fostering the exchange and contrast of opinions on pertinent issues.

Content

The compulsory block leads to the Postgraduate Diploma (25 credits) and the complete programme ends out in the award of the Masters degree (35 credits). Independent modules can be taken and an attendance certificate will be awarded.
