CCU's Area of Geographic and economic influence

CCU is located between Conway (pop 10,000) and Myrtle Beach (pop 25,000) in South Carolina. The State Capital is Columbia, which is relatively near to Atlanta (Georgia) and Charlotte (North Carolina).

Myrtle Beach and the area surrounding CCU are among the most important and well known tourist destinations in the USA. Apart from enjoying the sun and its beaches, visitors can practise a whole range of tourism activities such as golf, sightseeing, rambling, scuba diving and fishing as well as using its tourist resources and attractions like amusement parks, aquatic parks, state parks, historical resources and convention facilities. Its annual 215 days of sunshine make it one of the most popular tourist regions of the USA, alongside Florida.

Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce defines this area as "a paradise which tourists return to year after year, not only for its beaches and waves but also for its multiple attractions that cater for all ages and tastes, such as golf courses, theatres, amusement parks, shopping malls, gastronomy and cultural heritage.

Therefore, the area surrounding CCU is one of the best places in the USA to study tourism related issues given the importance of this sector in the destination's economy.
