'The International Centre for Tourism Studies and Research
The International Centre
for Tourism Studies and Research (CInERT) was set up in 1998. It is
the result of collaboration between the 'Escola Universitària de Turisme i
Direcció Hotelera', different UAB departments and tourism sector companies
and institutions.
This forum enables us to strengthen the synergies which
have derived from such a close relationship with the common aim of
contributing to the improvement of tourism research. The fundamental aims
of our centre are based on this close collaboration:
- It is the driving force behind tourism research in its different spheres, and
contributes alongside the UAB's research
tradition to the sphere of tourism.
- It is a point of encounter
for those agents involved in the improvement
and management of the tourism sector. As it was envisaged as
a university forum to debate the future of tourism, it is open to the
private sector, public institutions and, of course, the university.
In this spirit, our centre welcomes any initiative from those sectors willing
to contribute positively to the
well-being of one of the leading sectors in our country's economy.
CInERT forms part of the dept 2R+D at the 'EUTDH' (UAB),
which deals with research, international relations and postgraduate
courses. The director of CInERT and head of dept 2R+D is Gerda K.
Priestley. CInERT is coordinated by Albert Valcells Farraró and is also
staffed by:
- temporary collaborators with CInERT research projects
- doctorate scholarship holders and research assistants.
Every September CInERT awards a scholarship towards a
doctorate to assist with and foster research and learning among young
tourism researchers. The doctorate scholarship holders currently at CInERT
are:
- Sílvia Izquierdo Molinas (Graduate
in Geography) is doing her doctoral thesis on "Campsite Tourism in
Catalonia" as a research project for the Human Geography doctorate
programme. This study analyses the origins and evolution of camping
as a tourist activity.
- Lluís Alfons Garay Tamajón (Graduate
in Economics) is doing his doctoral thesis on the analysis of "The
dynamics of Catalonia tourism resorts", based on LifeCycle
model, the reestructuration thesis and ecological economics.
During the year 2000, another research scholarship was
awarded in one of CInERT's new research areas: safety at tourism
destinations.
